Trade Show Booth Design

It's been a while since I've posted any work. I wanted to create a new promotion piece and figured that a 3D modeled image would be nice since I don't have much of that in my portfolio. I find that a lot of the work I end up doing is some kind of display concept so what better to push that idea then a concept 'display' booth. The idea of a new Tetris game is completely made up, I just wanted to choose something fun and that most people are familiar with.

Space Tourism

I recently finished illustrating another book for Kids Can Press. This one is called Space Tourism. It was really fun to do, and I think turned out even better then the last one. The images were all really fun to illustrate mostly because I had so much freedom since conceptually a lot of the machines and space crafts don't exist yet. The whole project went really smoothly and efficiently. Here's a bunch of the spreads and pages.

Label Design

It's been a while since I've actually painted. I usually work mostly digitally. I finished this piece a little while ago. It was a personal piece for me to hang up in my home. It was definitely fun to mess around with the different mediums and size.

New Step By Step - How to cut your own bangs

This is an instructional series of simple illustrations I did for BUST Magazine. The project was small and quick with a low budget but it was fun and actually turned out pretty cool. The steps have text that go along with them, but you'll have to see the final layout in the magazine.

New Promo Piece

I wanted to create something that was scientific/medical or at least in that direction. I thought I'd make it more interesting and fun by adding the superhero spin to it. It was fun because I researched what an actual spider's silk gland looked like and just used that info to create the glands in Peter Parker's forearm. Add a little muscle research and layering and voila.

This was a label design I created for a liqueur bottle. The design was for a group of Guelph students who had a large project with a budget.

This is a three panel folding brochure I'm designing (still needs to be finalized) for the Toronto Yugoslavian SDA church. They wanted something that was attractive, stands out and shows a lot of pictures of the church and it's members.

ECYC Poster

I've been designing the look of the entire campaign for ECYC. ECYC is a Christian Youth Conference based out of Toronto. After many different concepts for logos and posters/banners it seems they have settled with this look - in fact they are very happy with it. It's not the kind of look that I would have originally chosen but it seems the committee is happy with it, so that's all the matters. The logo seems to be the only element left that is still not resolved, so hopefully we'll be able to get that sorted soon.

Website glitch...

If you've visited the website lately you may have noticed that some images were not loading completely leaving only half of an illustration visible. I just noticed the glitch this morning (after sending out promos ahhhhh). I have resolved the problem and hopefully it should be working fine now. You may have to empty your cache on your internet browser to clear the unwanted "half" images from before. Sorry for the mix up.

Step by Step

It's been a while since I've sent out any new work or promos so I thought I should maybe make something new that I can use to send out as a mailer. I wanted a good instructional illustration showing hands and decided that a series of images showing the loading of a pirate pistol would be a fun way to showcase all that. There was actually quite a bit of research involved which I think always makes an image better. Overall, a fun project to work on.

Vacation Time

Ultimate Trains

Here's some of the spreads I illustrated for 'Ultimate Trains' a book I did for Kids Can Press. It's a 40 page illustrated book on the evolution of trains throughout history. It was probably the largest project I have done yet. So that was a challenge but it was definitely a fun and interested project to work on. Plus I learned a lot about trains. It seemed like it took forever to complete but it's finally finished and should be printed soon. To see the rest of the images you can pick up a copy at your local book store or Chapters.

It's been a while since I've updated my blog. Sorry, you know how the holidays are. I've been doing quit a bit of projects here and there in the past month or two. Still waiting for the book I illustrated (Ultimate Trains) to get printed. I had an online component to illustrate a few weeks ago, so hopefully that's all that's left for me to do.
I was working out a series of concept sketches for MHZ Design for their client Presto. They were for a trade show style display to promote the Presto cards and systems in the Toronto area. Unfortunately I don't think I can post examples of those because MHZ design is still in the conceptual stages with their client.

Graphic concept for Humanoid Wakeboards

This was an illustration I did for a friend who wanted to turn her boyfriend into a superhero. He's really involved in extreme sports so she came up with "Captain Adrenalin". I'm sure this would have more relevance if you knew the guy personally but I posted it because it was fun to do and I'm happy with how it turned out.

This was a logo I designed for the Eastern Canadian Youth Conference. It's a Christian Youth Conference based out of the Toronto area.

Design Work Keeping Me Busy

I'm just finishing up some design work for the Toronto Yugoslavian SDA church. I designed some print material (bookmarks, posters, banners, bulletin etc) for their 40th anniversary celebration. I also did a chunk of work for 'Innovative Solutions' designing buttons for a clients website along with some print material. Along with that I recently finished a real estate promo package for the sale of a large $1,900,000 piece of property near Parry Sound. So I've been busy with design work here and there, but I'm looking forward to getting into some more glamourous illustration projects soon. I'm still trying to find the time to finish my new promo piece which I will hopefully be able to post soon.

Teaching

I just started teaching elementary and high school art classes part time. Along with the art class I teach a computer course that deals with graphic design and web. I'm enjoying it so far and feel it's a nice change to mix up my routine of freelance work. Because of this, I will be unavailable mid afternoon on weekdays as I will be in class. I can still be reached in the mornings and late afternoons, and of course always through email.
Besides teaching I'm still working away at the children's book for Kids Can Press, and a medical illustration of a hip that I hope to have posted soon.

Just wanted to post that I will be out of the office from July 11-18 as I will be on vacation with friends.

Lately I've been working on a few things. Finally started roughs for the children's book I'm doing for Kids Can Press. I did a last minute illustration for Sugar Media and some T-Shirts for Basecamp. I'm also sorting out an illustration for Outdoor Canada which will hopefully get worked out this week. There's been a lot of waiting around in between roughs for the projects and quotes on jobs so hopefully things will get cracking soon.

Trade Show Booth Posters

These are the two posters I created for a trade show booth for Cronin and Company - their client was Humana. The final output was two 5' x3' backlit posters highlighting different features that can be added to the house to make life easier for seniors. It's nice to add some more 3D modeling to my portfolio because usually I tend to shy away from it.

Just a little update - I just finished two posters for a Humana trade show booth. I'll post those images soon. I'll be starting the long process of illustrating a children's book for Kids Can Press, just waiting for the details to get sorted out. It's a 40 page book on the evolution on trains. I usually don't work with logo design but right now I'll be working out 3 - for Straight Up Productions, Beds and Bunks and MTEL.

This is an illustration I did for MHZ Design for their client RediRack which is a company that makes shelving units for big box stores like Costco and Home Depo. Pretty straight forward but it was interesting to do because it's one of my first jobs I've done using SketchUp. Everything went pretty smoothly.

I've updated the website with some of the new pieces I've done recently. I also cleaned up a few little errors on the site. Other than that I'm currently working on a bulletin for the Willowdale Seventh-Day Adventist Church in North Toronto. I'm also finishing up some stuff for MHZ Design. Building Illustration

I wanted to mix tight line work with loose watercolor. The line work is generated by 3D modeling and the paint was photoshoped using scanned textures. By adding a traditional paint coloring I wanted to make the model look more conceptual and traditional while still retaining the precision of a 3D model.

The past few days have been kinda hectic - things are usually either slow or very busy, I guess that's just the nature of the business. I'm currently working on a small illustration for Integra Graphic Design and a larger concept sketch for MHz Design which may turn into a larger final illustration. Unfortunately I can't show you any of the work because of a confidentiality agreement. I'm also getting more drawings for College Woodwork. Along with that, I will be meeting with Micromedia Design to talk about a possible illustration collaboration for a new company. That with a few other things down the pipe line have been keeping me busy. Just thought I'd keep you posted. Hopefully, I'll be able to show some samples of the work next time.
